Oscar 2014 Picks (or Watch All Seven Deadly Sins In Action Watch Party)

So, every sermon has material that ends up "on the cutting room floor," to use a movie phrase. This is stuff that, intentionally or not, is left out of the sermon by the preacher. I, for one, call this the editorial work of the Holy Spirit. Here is a paragraph on the Oscars I intended to include toward the end of the message but it was left out: (You can watch the full service by clicking here.)

Tonight we’ll have the occasion to see all Seven Deadly Sins, and probably a few extras, on display: it’s Oscar night. Look for evidence of Pride, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, Envy, Lust, and Wrath. Winners—wait, they don’t use the word “winner” anymore, do they? Now they say, “The Oscar goes to…” so that no one feels like a loser. Fair enough. Those receiving recognition for their achievement in film will graciously acknowledge their fellow honorees. Those whose recognition is not honored with an Oscar will graciously celebrate the other’s achievement. But what about all the behind the scenes stuff? How many hours have been spent in tanning salons or dentist’s chairs or at the tailor? How much money was spent to make everyone and everything appear perfect? Who will be reduced to most beautiful or handsome, their value only determined by their sex appeal—or lack thereof? Who will be sentenced to fashion jail? How lavish will the after parties be? How much food and drink will be consumed or wasted, uneaten? Who will be celebrated as an overachiever? Who will be a slacker? Who will look upon someone else and reduce them only to their things—and want to take something to build themselves up--like a certain gold statue? Who will not be able to control their anger and will lash out at others? I love Oscar night!
